Synopsis:
Logline:
Things turn ugly in a mining camp in Kentucky in 1910 when workers try to unionize and one man must choose between survival or his soul. Synopsis KENTUCKY 1910, the hills are filled with exploited coal miners and moonshiners bootlegging alcohol. SONNY meets drifter, DANIEL, as he is caught trying to steal moonshine from local moonshiner and camp barber WILLIAM. SONNY is newly married to ELLIE (a school teacher) and THADDIUS, the mine supervisor of mining camp NO. 4, asks him to talk to SILAS, who is squatting on company land and refuses to move. This fails and THADDIUS has REESE and EARL kill SILAS because they need the land for mining purposes. SONNY, after getting DANIEL a job at the mines, discovers the murder and threatens to tell authorities when THADDIUS reminds him that the coal company owns everything, including the law, and he would only lose his job and that he and his wife would starve. SONNY is still defiant until ELLIE tells him she is pregnant and SONNY decides that his family is more important than telling the truth about the murder of SILAS.

Six months pass and it is now winter. ELLIE is with child and things have calmed down. SONNY is living with guilt and hides the truth from GREENBERRY and HANNA, friends who run the company store and SILAS' cousins, as EARL uses that power over SONNY to control and use him. DANIEL in this time has become a liked figure in the camp and befriends MR. RAWLINGS on a trip to town to buy a pistol. MR. RAWLINGS is a union representative, sent to start a chapter in camp No. 4 and he gets DANIEL to help him recruit miners. At a secret meeting THADDIUS shows up and in anger fires friends of SONNY and DANIEL and runs MR. RAWLINGS out of town. He speaks for MR. STEARN (company owner) and opposes any attempt to form a union. DANIEL stands on his own and begins to get signatures for the union behind THADDIUS' back and while doing so meets a local girl, MARY, and falls in love. THADDIUS, REESE and EARL find out what DANIEL is doing. During a blast on a mine entrance EARL tricks DANIEL to enter the mine and the mine collapses killing DANIEL. SONNY confronts THADDIUS and can take no more, he is going to authorities. That night, after telling ELLIE everything that has happened, EARL breaks in to SONNY'S house and kills ELLIE and nearly kills SONNY. He sets the house on fire to cover the murders but SONNY revives and barely escapes. He is found by HANNA and GREENBERRY who with the help of the local Indian medicine woman nurse him back to health, while hiding this from THADDIUS who assumes SONNY died with ELLIE.

SONNY slowly heals and is haunted by the deaths of SILAS, ELLIE and his unborn child, which he blames himself. HANNA and GEENBERRY try to convince him to leave town, and that getting revenge wouldn't accomplish anything and that THADDIUS would just be replaced by someone just as ruthless. After looking through the burnt rubble of his home and visiting DANIEL'S house, he finds DANIEL'S gun. He decides to seek revenge, since he has nothing to lose now, and kills EARL as he opens his door early the next morning. REESE hears the shot and has a shoot out with SONNY in which he gets shot in the leg. REESE pleads for his life and promises to help SONNY stop THADDIUS. THADDIUS from behind shoots and wings SONNY and a short chase puts them in the middle of the camp surrounded by miners. The town is surprised to see SONNY alive and SONNY tells them what THADDIUS has done. As THADDIUS is about to silence SONNY he is stopped and arrested by MR. STEARN, who has brought the marshal after WILLIAM sent for his help. STEARN is really a just man that did not know of what THADDIUS had done and asks SONNY to stay on as supervisor in THADDIUS' place. Realizing there is nothing left for him in the town SONNY decides to move on down the tracks after saying goodbye to friends HANNA, GREENBERRY and WILLIAM.
