Plot Synopsis:
Seventeen year old Julie Ashbrook has been plagued by nightmares since the
death of her mother a year ago. Julie lives with her father, unsympathetic
and childishly tyrannical, who has been trying to make a fast killing
buying and fixing worthless houses.
One Saturday he drags Julie out to help him clean up his latest acquisition, a hopelessly decayed wreck far out in the country. No sooner have they begun the impossible task when Dad abandons Julie to continue on her own, claiming business in town. Alone, Julie is plagued by bizarre aqueous phenomena: pipes work or don't work at their whim, a bucket of water spilled on the floor skitters away into the comers and disappears. Julie is unsure whether these events are real or figments of her fragmenting imagination.
That afternoon Julie is joined by her friends: mildly nerdish Jake, flaky Tanya, down to earth Lisa. They bring her lunch and she pressures them into staying to help her. Later they are joined by Wade, a loutish bully who, in a moment of more than ordinary brutishness tries to molest Tanya. Unable to force Wade to leave, the others decide to flee back to town. Unknown to them the house itself takes revenge on Wade when a demon in the toilet castrates him then sucks him into the drains.
When the kids try to escape Jake's car is swallowed up by a bog which vanishes immediately afterwards, leaving a car antenna projecting from dry land. They decide to wait for Julie's dad to rescue them. Meanwhile the house exhibits other bizarre quirks: the kitchen faucet explodes, cellar drains burst to flood the house, nearly drowning Jake, then the water vanishes as suddenly as it appeared.
When Julie's Dad drives onto the grounds of the house the demon invades his car. The water in the radiator explodes, scalding him to death. His body is found by a mysterious Mr. Plummer, who shows up later at the house to inform Julie and the others that the house is haunted by a water demon which he will exorcise.
That night Plummer empties the living room and draws a pentagram on the floor. He positions the kids inside the star and proceeds with the exorcism.
While all five of them are paralyzed on the floor, a storm gathers inside the room which seems to extend to infinity above them. Amid the wind and rain swarms of demons and monsters descend on the helpless humans, followed at last by their master, a grotesque, Lovecraftian horror. Plummer tries to drive the creature away with his rites. It rips his tongue out them pumps him full of water until he swells up and bursts like a giant tick.
The others seem doomed when suddenly, amid the noise and chaos, a mysterious figure which may or may not be the spirit of Julie's dead mother appears and leads them out of the house to safety. Behind them the house is pulled inside out and swallowed up by the living mire which appears beneath it.
The next morning the kids awaken to find the house gone, solid ground
remaining where the building had been sucked under. Baffled but safe, they
start their long walk back to town as a gentle rain begins.
